Cotton lisle and Pima, for those unfamiliar with the terms, are top quality long staple cottons which have gone through special processes. The first is mercerization - sometimes double mercerization - with which we are all familiar. The second process is called "singing" (from 'to singe' - we do not croon at the cotton). Here, the cotton is quickly passed through a small gas flame to burn off the excess fibers and create a smoother surface which yields a more sensuous feel. Cotton lisle is also known as fil d'ecosse.

In terms of fiber selection, personal preference is the arbiter. ExtraFine merino is the sock favorite by a small margin for its wicking and cushioning properties. Cotton socks are second on a year-round basis and the leader in Summer months. For its cool-wearing properties, cotton cannot be outdone. However, cotton does not wick moisture and, once wet, will remain wet until the socks are removed. Cotton also loses its ability to cushion foot shock when wet.

All top-quality luxury socks should be laundered in cold water and dried without heat for the best longevity. A dryer is acceptable if used on the no-heat "fluff" setting.
