What is Filo Di Scozia? The trademark, "Filo di Scozia®" (two ply, long staple, double mercerized cotton), has always been used to indicate the highest grade cotton fabrics with unique characteristics of brilliance, softness, silky hand, solid dyes and, above all, the ability to maintain these characteristics over time. These precious fabrics feature: The Most Luxurious Cotton Yarn spun exclusively from the finest long-staple cotton. The yarn is Combed to eliminate the shorter, weaker fibers. It Is Twisted and Doubled; in other words, made up of two identical quality strands. The twisting operation more than doubles its original strength; It Is Singed, that is, run across a gas flame which burns off any protruding fibers to achieve maximum smoothness and sheen. What are the Limited Editions? On a regular basis, we commission Zimmerli of Switzerland to knit special designs of their famous Filo di Scozia two-ply jersey for us. Once the fabric is made, it is never duplicated. Zimmerli uses the fabric to create very limited quantities of the pajamas for us. Once each size runs out, that's it. No more will be made. Zimmerli Swiss Silk Pajamas Zimmerli of Switzerland's 100% Swiss woven silk satin pajamas and matching dressing gown are supremely elegant, ideal for the man or woman who prefers a touch of understatement in a top-quality ensemble. A warning to the gents: As you'll see below, we have found a proclivity among the distaff for "appropriation" of these fine garments. You might consider ordering your size ... and hers! A super-soft silk and elastic pajama waistband tops the single-button fly closure. Zimmerli's roomy, soft-collared pajama top features a four-button front and two extremely generous patch-pockets on the waist. The shawl-collared dressing gown is the most comfortable I've ever worn. With two oversize waist pockets and large chest pocket the below-the-knee length robe is the personification of exquisite taste. Closing comfortably with the matching silk belt, the dressing gown style is subtly enhanced through the use of silk-covered mini-shoulder padding. An exceptional treat, Zimmerli makes these only rarely ... and they tend to fly out of our shop when available. Note that the matching blue - as well as complimentarily contrasting grey or red - boxers are available here. Handmade Monogramming We have been monogramming for decades using old, traditional hand methods. All monograms are hand-drawn and then hand-embroidered using the finest French embroidery cotton, DMC. Prior to making the actual embroidery, special complicated designs such as Row 3-Center can be e-mailed or faxed to the client for approval. Monograms can be done in virtually any color. They can match the fabric, be slightly darker or lighter than the fabric, or be done in a completely contrasting color. Due to the fact that all designs are hand-drawn onto the fabric, there is virtually no design or lettering style which cannot be done. Most tasteful initial designs are slightly larger than ¼" in height. Initials can be done with or without periods and with or without opening & closing carats. Unlike machine embroidery which can only follow computer-generated lettering styles and usually needs a backing fabric to prevent wrinkling, hand monograms are done one stitch at a time using a sewing needle and magnifying glass. An average hand-made monogram requires about an hour to make and, as such, are expensive. Prices are provided for the all monograms in the chart except the double helix. This and other unique styles are done by quotation and range from $80 up. If you would like a quotation on a special design, please use the Contact Form and select 'special order'. Please note: The "AKS" style monogram is done with the surname initial in the center. Ordering more than one or two monogrammed pieces will add from one to three weeks to the delivery of your order.
