Cotton lisle and Pima cotton, for those unfamiliar with the terms, are top quality long staple cottons which have gone through special processes. In terms of Boot Socks, cotton is not great unless it is the thicker "soft cotton". When thin cotton gets wet from perspiration, it simply remains wet and can harden when it dries.

In terms of fiber selection, merino wool is ideal. ExtraFine merino is the boot sock favorite by far for its wicking and cushioning properties. Merino boot socks will significantly lessen the foot shock inherent in downhill climbs and offers the foot greater gripping power. Additionally, merino wool is a great temperature regulator and will not get cold when wet. Its ability to wick will also keep the foot cooler in warm weather. An extra pair on a long hike is a good idea ... and they can serve well as mittens in an emergency.

All top-quality luxury socks should be laundered in cold water and dried without heat for the best longevity. A dryer is acceptable if used on the no-heat "fluff" setting.
